Indian black salt also known as sulemani namak, black salt, kala-loon or Kala Namak, is a salty and spicy fragrant spice used in South Asia. The spice consists largely of sodium chloride with a few impurities that give the salt its color and smell. The smell is mainly due to the sulfur content. Due to the presence of Greigite in the mineral, it forms a brownish pink to dark purple translucent crystals when whole and when ground into a powder, it is light pink to pink in color. Black salt (Kala namak) is widely used in Indian cuisine as well as in Ayurvedic medicine. Kala namak has a distinctive flavor. It is used in chutneys, raitas, provides a spicy fresh flavor in chaata and many other snacks. It is often used by people with high blood pressure or a low salt diet because it does not contain significant amounts of sodium. It is also believed to relieve both heartburn and flatulence.
